Platform Five – This week’s most talked about social media tools and platforms

Posted by Adam Vincenzini on Mar 4, 2011

Welcome to this week’s edition of Platform Five – a regular feature from the Paratus Communications blog which looks at the online tools and platforms that have been making headlines in the last seven days.

While the launch of iPad 2 hogged the spotlight this week, a number of other important developments took place, including some big news from Facebook.

Let’s jump straight in…this week’s hottest social media tool and platforms…

1. Facebook likes to like even more – Facebook has announced that it will be ending development of the ‘share’ button in favour of improving the functionality of ‘like’ – but, what does this mean? In short it means that a Facebook ‘like’ will become an even more powerful way to amplify links and drive traffic to third party sites. Stephanie Wonderlin does a great job of explaining the change in this YouTube video.

2. Gobble, gobble, gobble – Actually, it’s Gobbler and it’s quietly establishing itself as the best way to organise, back up and send audio content online. With ‘social audio’ tipped to be one of 2011′s big trends, this is worth adding to your toolbox.

3. Ditto tells you what to do next – Former Google employee, Jyri Engeström, launched a new iPhone app this week called Ditto. The app is part of a new wave of services that combines existing data with your preferences to help make recommendations to you, whether that is which movie to see or which restaurant to eat at.

4. Bing begins dealing – Microsoft launched Bing Deals in the USA this week which will aggregate offers from the likes of Groupon and Living Social. Bing Deals includes geo-location functionality to help make results as useful as possible.

5. Share every creative idea with EverytimeHQ – Creative inspiration often comes from music and movies but can you rely on memory alone to maximize this? If you can, then EverytimeHQ is worth a peek, especially if you work in the media production businesses.
